Quick answer

Use Transcript to check the recognized words against the recording. Choose Clean read when you want to turn a spoken draft into readable prose, and review the rewrite before sharing it. Highlights selects original passages; Chapters adds titles and jump points. These three tools need a compatible Apple Intelligence setup and supported languages.

When should I use Transcript?

Use Transcript for quotations, corrections and returning to the audio. It starts with the words recognized from the recording, arranged in paragraphs. Tap a word to replay that point and use Edit text to correct the paragraph.

It can still contain recognition mistakes. Check names, figures and quotations against playback. Keep this version when you need to show what someone said, with a way back to the recording.

What does Clean read change?

Clean read turns speech into prose you can edit. It is useful for a spoken first draft where repetition and unfinished sentences make the transcript awkward to read. The wording can change, so read it as a draft rather than an exact record.

Compare it with the original text and listen back where a detail matters. Correct recognition errors in Transcript first. A cleaner sentence is only useful if it still says what the speaker meant.

How do Highlights and Chapters differ?

Highlights picks passages from the original text. Tap a passage to hear it, then check whether it includes enough context for the point you want to make. It selects wording rather than writing new quotations.

Chapters creates titles and time links for a recording of at least two minutes and 120 words. Check the generated titles and their start times. Neither tool identifies speakers. Highlights, Chapters and Clean read require a compatible iPhone, ready Apple Intelligence models and support for the recording’s language.

What happens when I correct the transcript?

Correcting Transcript marks earlier outputs as outdated. The app keeps their text visible, but blocks whole-output export, copying and editing until you update. Update generates a new version and replaces any manual edits in that output. Save work you need before changing the source.

  1. Before source corrections, export or copy any manually edited output you need to keep.
  2. Correct the source words while listening.
  3. If an output is already outdated, long-press and copy any important passages individually before updating.
  4. Update the output, review the replacement and reapply any edits you kept.

Questions you may have

Can I quote Clean read word for word?

Check the quotation in Transcript and the recording first. Clean read rewrites the source and may use words the speaker did not say.

Can I transcribe without Apple Intelligence?

Yes. Transcription uses the bundled Whisper model. The writing tools have separate requirements.

Are Highlights guaranteed to be accurate?

They use original transcript passages, but that transcript may already contain a recognition error. Replay the selected passage and check its context.

Can I save both Transcript and Clean read?

Yes. Both export DOCX, TXT, PDF and Markdown. Give them distinct names so a checked transcript and a rewrite are easy to tell apart.
