Quick answer

For a voice message still inside WhatsApp, start with its own transcript option if available. You do not need a separate app just to read a supported message. Check important details by listening. Transcribe Audio to Text cannot access your chats; it can only work with an audio file you have separately saved and can import.

Where should you start in WhatsApp?

Look under Settings > Chats > Voice message transcripts and choose a language. Long-press a message and select Transcribe.

For WhatsApp’s own iPhone transcription feature, its help specifies iOS 16 or later and Siri enabled. Check the available transcript languages on your phone; a language download may be needed before first use. If the feature or language is unavailable, ask the sender to write the important detail or listen to the original message.

Which details deserve a second listen?

A short message may have little context to help recognition. Replay names, addresses, dates and amounts before acting on them. In “not Tuesday, Thursday”, a missed word changes the arrangement. Compare the whole phrase rather than checking only the weekday.

Keep the original message available while taking notes. If a word is unclear even after replay, ask the sender instead of changing it to the most plausible guess. Mark your own explanation separately from the words you actually heard.

When would a separate transcription app help?

A separate app is relevant when you already have a saved audio file, not just a message inside a chat. Confirm that the file opens and plays from Files on the iPhone. The ability to listen in WhatsApp does not itself provide another app with an importable file.

After selecting an audio or video through Choose a file, choose the spoken language and Fast or High, then start transcription. Keep the app open while it works. Transcribe Audio to Text does not browse chats or retrieve message links. If you already have an accessible local audio file, use Choose a file > Files and select it. Review the words against playback. If the language is wrong, save any existing corrections before using More > Transcribe again…; a successful pass replaces the whole transcript.

How should you use the resulting text?

Keep only the details you need for the task. A personal reminder might need a time and address; it does not need the full conversation copied into another document. Check the destination before sharing anything from a private exchange.

For a saved file processed in our app, the audio and transcript stay on the phone during recognition. Export is a separate choice: pick a document format and the destination you intend. You can correct the transcript first, without treating an automatic result as the sender’s verified wording.

Questions you may have

Can the app open my WhatsApp chats?

No. It has no access to your chat history and cannot fetch audio from a message link. It needs an accessible local audio file.

What if the transcription misses a name or date?

Listen to the original message and check the full phrase. Ask the sender to confirm a detail you still cannot hear rather than trusting the most plausible spelling.

Why isn’t the message’s language available?

WhatsApp’s transcript languages depend on your phone’s setup. Check the language choices in its transcript settings and finish any requested download. If the message’s language is unavailable, listen to it or ask the sender to write the details you need.

When is an external transcript useful?

It can help when you need an editable document from an audio file already saved on your phone. Import that file, review it and export a working copy. A chat message alone is not an importable file.
